Trivia

  • The draw for the next round of the Scottish Cup was made. Celtic were again drawn away to Ayr Utd.
  • Sean Fallon was fit and came in to his usual left back position; Peter Goldie was not dropped on his return though, but moved to right half with Alec Boden dropping out; the talked about re-shuffle up front finally appeared with, on the left wing Eric Smith taking over from Neil Mochan (who was dropped and watched the game from the stand) and John McAlindon replacing the injured Jim Sharkey at centre forward. Sharkey had collected a clearance full in the face during the waterlogged Cup game against Morton and was cut up and battered.

Review

A quick start or Celtic with some good play. McAlindon missed an excellent chance when he was set up by Fernie and had other chances which failed to find the net. Reid hit the crossbar for Motherwell at the other end and both teams were making a game of it. Tully had a goal disallowed and Motherwell hit the post but it remained 0-0 at half time.
The second half resumed in the same manner with chances at both ends. Tully required attention to a facial injury but it was the Irishman on the sheet first when he converted a pass from Fernie. Three minutes later Smith scored from close in. Motherwell though were not finished. Gardiner slotted a penalty away and they equalised before the end through a Forrest header.
