Trivia

  • First game of the season and Celtic started with a long injury list. Those missing included Jock Stein (ankle), Willie Fernie (leg), Jimmy Walsh (ankle) and Billy McPhail (leg). Fernie and McPhail recovered to take their places at the start. Stein underwent another operation on his ankle in the closed season and by the time of the game was no longer on crutches but could only walk with the aid of a stick.
  • aberdeen were without their usual keeper, Fred Martin, allowing Morrison the Scotland U23 goalkeeper to step in. Wilson at right half also stepped up from the reserves.
  • In fine Aberdeen fashion the skies were grey and rain had fallen for the full 12 hours before kick off and continued through the game.
  • During the closed season the SFA had moved headquarters from Carlton Place to Park Gardens
  • Elsewhere in world affairs, all British servicemen had been recalled to their units as the situation in Suez approached climax. British Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden did not rule out an offensive military intervention from British forces to overcome the Egyptian seizure and nationalisation of the Suez Canal.

Review

The start was delayed when the Aberdeen goalkeeper Morrison injured his hand immediately before kick off and required attention off the field which delayed the kick off. Higgins missed a golden opportunity to put Celtic ahead after eight minutes. Fernie scored the first goal from a Collins cross which was missed by Morrison. Aberdeen hit the post in the first minutes of the second half. Collins won a ball from Caldwell and set up Higgins for the second goal. Yorston pulled one back for Aberdeen before the end.
Aberdeen were strangely ineffective and both Celtic goals came from ultimately goalkeeping errors from the injured Scotland U23 goalkeeper.
In the other group match Rangers beat East Fife 3-0 at Ibrox.
