Trivia

  • This game was keenly awaited – the third Celtic – Rangers game of the season in 18 days. The first game saw a 2-1 win for Celtic in the League Cup. The second saw a thrilling game and a 4-3 win for Rangers in the Glasgow Cup. In this, the second League Cup game between the sides, most observeres were expecting to see the usual Celtic League Cup cave in.
  • Eric Smith had reported back to the Army but was released again and travelled up and was available for the game. However, Tully was switched to the right hand side and Neil Mochan came in on the left. Higgins was out with what was said to be further knee trouble rather than a leg injury. Stein was still in a lengthy process of recuperation from his ankle operatuion in the closed season and in consultation with the hospital and specialists.
  • At least another 500 latecomers to the game were locked out with the official attendance given as 84,000. The game was played in rain which was occasionally torrential.

Review

Celtic made a promising start and Mochan twice had Niven in trouble within the first five minutes with accurate crosses. Celtic were more dangerous and the clever and energetic play of the forwards gave the Rangers defense little ease. McColl had a tremendous shot from 35 yards out just which was barely a foot away from goal before the interval. Fallon headed an overhead kick from Scott off the line in the second half. Mochan hit the post in the 52nd minute. Towards the end Peacock and Tully started a move with Tully passing infield to McPhail. He passed to Ferniw 2 yards out who contrived to put the ball over the bar.

In the other game Aberdeen beat east Fife 4-1. Celtic now needed to travel to methil on the weekend and get a draw at least to qualify from the group stages and advance.
