Trivia

  • Jock Stein had discarded the tick and was getting around on the ankle more freely now. he foresaw gtting back to playing sooner rather than later. Tully's groin injury was healing and he had started light training again at the beginning of the week. John Higgins too was back training but would need to prove his fitness with a reserve game.
  • Tully made the game and Neil Mochan moved over to the right to accommodate the Cheekie Charlie.
  • Queen's Park had done remarlkably well for an amateur team the previous season. When it became clear that they were going to win the B Division there was much debate as to whether an amateur side could and would compete against the professional teams in the top division. There was no impediment to their promotion and they duly took their place alongside the other Division 1 team (note the change from the previous season's designation from Division A).
  • Celtic played a midweek friendly against Queen of the South but there appears to be no record of the scores or the teams. John Jack took a knock in the game but was fit enough for the Saturday game and duly took his place. Bobby Evansd and Bobby Collins were in Ireland playing for the Scottisah league against the Irish League in a 7-1 win in Belfast.
  • On the day of the game Alec Boden was transferred to Ayr Utd and he played this afternoon for Ayr against Raith Rovers. Alec played as captian of the Ayr side, a promotion which no doubt influenced his decision to swuitch clubs. Alec had been at Celtic for 13 years, from when he signed for the club in 1943 from Duntocher Boys Guild
  • Having failed to persuade Jim Sharkey to switch from Celtic to St Mirren, they changed their target to Jimmy Walsh. Celtic gave them permission to approach the Fifer. Walsh was none to be less than ecstatic to not be getting a game and he had delayed re-signing his contract at the start of the season.
  • Dundee United wanted to bring ex-Celtic veteran Jimmy Delaney bac to Scotland from Cork Athletic in Ireland but baulked at the £1000 asking fee from the Irish club. He was now 42 and still actively playing. That price brought the negotiations to an abrupt end. (Delaney was, and possibly still is the only player to win Cup winners medals in both Scotland, England and Ireland.)

In world events, the British Parliament had been recalled from summer recess as the Suez Crisis entered another level of conflict with the breakdown in talks with the Egyptian authorities after their seizure of the Canal and the Canal Zone.

Review

Played in glorious siesta sunshine. In the first attack Tully fired over a cross, McPhail won the header and Mochan lurking on the penalty spot fired home off the underside of the bar. And then it kind of died, despite the eagerness of Queen's Park to show the mettle of the amateurs and the confidence of Collins, Fernie and Tully. fernie hit the post after walzing past three players.
The Celtic players may well have got a rocket a half time because they came out with a degree more decision than throughout the first half following the early goal. Queen's too upped the tempo but despite entertaining play there was no score until the final minute when Collins popped up for the second Celtic goal.
