Trivia

  • Billy Craig and Jimmy Walsh came into the forward line with Eric Smith and Neil Mochan missing out. Willie Fernie played on the left wing for this game and this was thye position that he would feature for Scotland having been selected for the team against Wales. Bobby Collins was also selected by Scotland at inside left where he played in this game. The clear implicatiuon is that Celtic helped the national side out by giving both players a run in the positions they would occupy in the international.
  • During the week Celtic made the provisional signing of Jim Conway, a 16 year old centre forward with Coltness Utd. He would make his debut next season. Jimmy McGrory resisted all the pleas of the 16 year old to be allowed to go full time, but was made to stay as a provisional and carry on with his apprenticeship as an engine fitter. In the true spirit of Celtic signings from the Junior ranks, Conway immediately broke his wrist playing for Coltness.

Review

Both teams wanted to win this game. Celtic had only 2 points from three games and Falkirk had started the season poorly with only 2 points from five games. Falkirk settled earliest and attacked with vigour but without scoring. Celtic countered with Walsh and McPhail combining and Fernie starting to get to grips with his left sided position. Afetr a quarter of an hour Celtic started to come more into the game with Craig oplaying well. The game took on an end-to-end nature with both teams pushing for the opener but at half time it remained 0-0.
The same high pace continued in the second half but it was not until the 69th minute that the opener came for Celtic when McPhail took the ball through a gaggle opf Falkirk players and then laid the ball back for Collins to score from close in.
