Celtic welcomed Dunfermline on this day in 1956 on league duty and recorded a 3-1 win in front of a crowd of 11,000 who saw John Higgins open the scoring in the sixth minute. Dunfermline pulled one back just after the break but Neill Mochan regained Celtic’s lead on the hour-mark and Willie Fernie (below) put the game beyond any doubt in the 89th minute. The Hoops had previously beaten the Pars that season 6-3 on aggregate, a 6-0 win followed by a 3-0 defeat, in the League Cup quarter-final on their way to their first success in that particular competition with a 3-0 replay win over Partick Thistle.
