Trivia

  • John Higgins was again fit, having missed out on the Aberdeen game through an arm injury and Tully made way for his return – a first time for Tully to be effectively dropped at the expense of a team mate.
  • Celtic completed their plans for the tour of the USA and Canada in the closed season and announced the tour of nine games. despite being offered the chance to fly to the States both messrs. McGrory and Kelly chose the sea passage for the party leaving by the Mauritania on 8th May and returning on the Queen Elizabeth on 12th June. However with Scotland on tour immediately prior then it would be necessary for Bobby Collins and Willie Fernie to fly out.

Review

Celtic started well but St Mirren also had their chances but on thirteen minutes Collins beat two St Mirren defenders before squaring it for Bertie Peacock to lash home a rare goal. St Mirren's defense performed well and they were still capable of causing a fluster on the break. Beattie had to be alert to shots from Devine, Gemmell and McCulloch. At the other end Forsyth in the St Mirren goal was defying Celtic increasing their lead with a series of great saves. However five minutes from half time Higgins gathered the ball in the area after an error from Dallas and cooly beat the onrushing Forsyth to make it 2-0. After a Mochan rasper at the start of the second half, Devine came away with the ball and his cross found Holmes who odded the ball behind Beattie. Celtic forwards chopped and changed positions at will with McPhail popping up all over the place.
