Trivia

  • Frank Meechan came in at left back for the injured Fallon, and up front Bobby Collins and Neil Mochan swapped places on the left side. Bobby Evans who had a slight groin strain following the Cup semi-final replay was considered fit enough to play.
  • In goal for Hearts was Gordon Marshall Senior, who , along with his son, would go on to play for Celtic. Alfie Conn's son would go on to play for both Celtic and Rangers.

Review

Almost from kick off, Bauld took a ball on his chest and hit it on the volley past Beattie. Two minutes gone – one goal down. The second goal wasn't much longer in coming. Bauld was having free run of both wings at will and causing all kinds of problems for the half and full backs. He picked up the ball on the left and crossed for Young who took no time to fire the ball home. Thirteen minutes – two-nil. Celtic, as might be seen, were sluggish in the early part of the game. Hearts were by no means perfect particularly in defense, but were very well organised in attack. Collins' goal came after a mazy run by Fernie and added interest to a game which by that time had lost focus. The Celtic goal brought Hearts awake again and Young chipped forward for Conn to carefully control and pass accurately to Crawford in front of goal, who could not miss.
For Celtic only Fernie and Collins came away with any degree of credit, but it could have been so much better if Byrne, Mochan and Higgins had put a somewhat suspect Hearts defense under more pressure.
