  • This was an evening game on the Friday with a kick off at 7:15 pm with the benefit of the Rugby Park floodlights. Both Kilmarnock and Celtic had back-to-back games to try to finish the season off, Celtic playing Hibernian on the Saturday and Kilmarnock playing Queen's Park.
  • Bonnar returned to between the sticks McCreadie having been given his debut; Bertie Peacock was still returning from his international duties and Mochan continued at left half with the front line remaining the same as the team against Aberdeen on Easter Monday.
  • Kilmarnock, who put Celtic out at the semi final, had two days before lost the replayed Scottish Cup Final against Falkirk 2-1 after extra time losing to a 101st minute goal from the Bairns.
  • Bertie Peacock had missed this and the previous game as he was with Ireland in Italy. They played ion Rome on the 25th April losing 1-0 to the Italians.
  • Billy McPhail, recovering from his ankle injury was now also sidelined with tonsilitis.
  • The big talk in the sports pages was the lifting of the sine die suspension against Willie Woodburn, the Rangers player. Woodburn had originally been suspended in 1954 and he had appealed regularly every 6 months. South of the border 4 players from Sunderland, two of them Scots, were suspended sine die for refusing to answer questions on illegal payments to players. Sunderland were ion severe financial and organisational crisis and under intense investigation by the football authorities.
  • John Charles, ex of Leeds Utd made a record in British football transfers, moving from Leeds to Juventus for £65,000.
