Trivia

  • An unchanged side from the one that played against Hapoel in the Friendly, with Jim Sharkey, who had an excellent game against the Israelis, continuing at outside right and Charles Partrick Tully at outside left. Tully had acquired a new zest for the game. He might not be so fast but he was still as skillful and deadly accurate and able to see a pass long before the opening was there. Rangers threw new recruit Alan Austin of Kilmarnock in as a debutee for the game.
  • Bobby Evans and Bobby Collins were in the Scottish league side which beat the Irish League 5-1 in Dublin on 17th September. Collins scored a hat-trick.
  • Celtic signed Bobby Carroll on provisional forms from Irvine Meadow during the week. An outside right, Carroll would make his debut in the '59-'60 season.
  • Celtic's first win at Ibrox in the League since the 1935-36 season. The crowd 'action' was limited to the appearance of Tricolours at one end and Union Jacks at the other along with the usual barracking, but there was no violence or bottle throwing as had been seen of late.
  • Outside of football No 1 in the hit parade charts was Paul Anka singing 'Diana'. Elvis Presley had 3 records in the top 10 with 'All Shook Up', 'Paralyzed' and 'Teddy Bear'.

Review[Untitled]

Not the most exciting or inspiring Rangers – Celtic game but an absorbing and hard fought 90 minutes by both sides with Rangers having the predominance of possession but Celtic having the finesse and the skill. Rangers had the best of the opening play but on 19 minutes McPhail released Collins early and he went hareing down the left wing, beat Shearer and cut inside to send a rocket past Ritchie in the Rangers goal. Shearer and Tully then got a telling off collectively from referee Phillips. Celtic's defense looked good with Evans and Peacock popping up everywhere to squeeze out and snuff Rangers attacks. Fernie too helped out but was also able to make runs forward feed Tully. Six minutes from the interval Rangers scored. A Scott cross was met by the flying Simpson and his header gave Beattie no chance of stopping it.
Celtic missed a good chance to go ahead just after the interval when Sammy Baird took a fresh air sweep at a McPhail cross with the goal at his mercy. The second goal duly arrived on 54 minutes from a free kick 25 yds out. Rangers expected the regular Collins firepower but he cleverly lobbed the ball to McPhail whose header beat Ritchie just under the crossbar. It was Celtic's turn to be on top and Rangers had to fight to keep out efforts from Wilson and Tully. The third goal came when Collins passed to McPhail who took the ball way out on the left before crossing perfectly for Wilson to head home.Rangers came right back and Simpson pushed a Murray cross under Beattie's body. The last few minutes saw Celtic defending hard and Rangers missed two good chances to level the game.
