Trivia

  • Celtic (and Rangers) had a week off and did not play in the League programme of the 5th October. This had been pre-arranged in the fixtures with Scotland playing away.
  • Bobby Evans and Bobby Collins were both in the Scotland team which beat Ireland 1-1 in Belfast on 5th October. Bertie Peacock played for Ireland. On the 9th October all three were again involved along with Dick Beattie in the Scottish League goal when the Scottish League beat the Irish League 7-0 at Ibrox.
  • Charlie Tully was fit again and came in on the right wing; Eric Smith moved to the left wing and with McPhail out with an ankle injury, Neil Mochan came in at centre forward. Bertie Auld dropped out.
  • Eric Smith was demobbed from the Army and went full time with Celtic as did the new bhoy John Colrain.
  • Having already this season had tales of Willie Fernie transferring, the latest alleged Celtic departure was to be Bobby Collins and rumours were flying thick and fast about his transfer. Cardiff City allegedly offered £20,000 for his services – a derisory offer even by the standards of 1957. Then Lazio were supposed to be interested in taking the Wee Barra to Rome.
  • John Higgins out since the beginning of the season was hoping to resume training again. He was also due to marry this week.
  • The 'flu epidemic continued to be the main talking pioint in Scotland with an estimated 52,000 pupils sick and off school this week.
  • On the world stage Russia launched the first artificial earth satellite in Sputnik-1; south of the border Britain experienced it's worst case of radioactive contamination when the reactor pile at Windscale in Cumbria caught fire and released massive amounts of iodine-131 into the surrounding countryside. This was by and large hushed up but led to the dumping of large quantities of milk and the slaughtering of lamb.

Review

Again Celtic started under the cosh but in the 9th minute stole away and opened the scoring. A long clearance by Fallon fell to Mochan who beat his marker and hit a long low shot past Drummond. Raith were not to be put off however and Beattie and Evans were the busiest players on the field.
Celtic were close to going further ahead on restart with a Sammy Wilson shot which was well saved by Drummond. Raith then hit the bar and forced 6 corners in succession. Celtic were just beginning to get on top when Evans sent a short pass back to Beattie and Copland nipped in to scramble the ball home.
