- Billy McPhail had been selected top play in the Scotland team which were to play Wales at Hampden on 13th November but had to pull out with a recurrence of the ankle injury. The international game was too soon but he had recovered enough to be fit for the St Mirren game. This would have made four Celts in the Scotland team – a rare event. As it was Evans, Ferniwe and Collins played with Collins scoring a Scotland's goal in a 1-1 draw.
- With Bobby Collins out injured with an ankle injury picked up in the international, in came new recruit John Divers for his debut.
Review
St Mirren started well and proceeded to play Celtic at their own game of close passing football. Tully continued with his form of late inspiring the bhoys with good vision and inceptive football. In the early stages young Divers showed himself to be far from overawed on his debut and was unlucky not to score early on. He was more successful on the twenty minute mark though when McPhail trailed the ball out left and sent an inviting cross over that Divers headed home. Four minutes from half time St Mirren levelled. Johnston sent McGill away with a good pass oput and the inside forward beat Evans and Donnelly to send a low shot past Beattie.. Just before half time Higgins of St Mirren had to retire and he failed to appear at the start of the second half. Higgins scored from a Tully corner to put the Celts in front again but back came St Mirren to level again with a header from McKay. Both sides went for the winner to give an exciting end to the game. Celtic's appeal for a penalty was turned down and St Mirren hit the bar. In the end St Mirren came away with a creditable draw from what by all accounts was an excellent game.
