Trivia

  • Billy McPhail duly made his returrn to the first team with Alec Byrne moving to outside left and Neil Mochan missing out.
  • The draw for the third round of the Scottish Cup was made. Celtic were paired with Clyde in an away tie. However there were doubts that the game would go ahead at Shawfield in view of the tragedy that had occurred there when Celtic last played at Shawfield in back in December when, following the collapse of a boundary wall, one person died and 50 were injured. The wall had been rebuilt but authorities were uncertain as to whether it was strong enough or "hardened off" enough.
  • Celtic signed 19 year old Frank Haffey, a goalkeeper, from Maryhill Harp on the very day he transferred to them from Campsie Black Watch. He immediately made his debut for the Reserves in the Second XI Cup against Aberdeen which Celtic won 2-0. Dick Beattie had had an Army medical and there was the chance that he would be called up for National Service.
  • Celtic had another player booked for Celtic from Duntocher Hibs. This was right half Pat Crerand. He had been signed on provisional papers by Celtic back in August but his first 'mention in despatches' occurred this month when he had a sensational game, despite coming away on the losing side, in the Junior international for Scotland against Ireland in Belfast.
  • The game was played in difficult conditions with light snow falling.
  • The Joe McBride on the Killie left wing is the same Joe Mcbride who would evetually become a Celt as Jock Stein's first signing. The veteran Celt Willie Toner was still there too at centre half for Killie.

Review

A close game which Celtic should have won. But a strong fight back by Kilmarnock saw the points shared. The playing conditions somewhat hindered a strong attacking game but even sdo the game was interesting throughout by all accounts. McPhail made a strong return from injury with good passing. In fact it was his move past Toner which set up Sammy Wilson to volley the opening goal from 20 yards. Thereafter Celtic's toil fell somewhat by the wayside and Kilmarnock through sheer industry of their forward line had good shots on goal with beattie performing in cat-like mode to deny them till the 65th minute when a left foot shot by McBride beat him. Celtic's unbeaten away form, not for the first time was held together through the strong spine of Beattie, Evans and McPhail.
