Trivia

  • The Quarter Final first leg played at Celtic Park on the Wednesday. The only change in the Celtic team was Mike Jackson coming in at centre forward for Jim Conway who was out with a thigh injury.
  • Following the trouble at the first Glasgow derby game the previous Saturday 14 people were seen before the Glasgow Magistrates and charged with breach of the peace, affray and malicious mischief. Part of the reason given was again drink – because of the downpour pre-game many had gone into the surrounding pubs to get out of the rain.
  • The fallout continued on the fights and bottle throwing from the Rangers game. The clubs both appeared to be exonerated and the media threw their weight behind the Magistrates to thoroughly punish those offenders that had been lifted during the game. The Evening Times called for the offenders to be sent to the High Court rather than the Magistrates. The Magistrates threw it back to the SFA and the clubs to 'take action' or they would refer the case to the Secretary of State for Scotland for extra powers to deal with the problem. Proposals suggested were:-
    • making the games all-ticket affairs, with ticket distribution in the hands of the Supporters Associations and those Associations to be responsible for the good behaviour of those they sold tickets to.
    • making the display of banners a breach of the peace
    • increasing the police presence on the terraces
    • better behaviour by the players of both sides on the field
    • instigating a new tournament where players from both teams would play in a joint team taking on a series of 'combined teams. Suggested were Hearts – Hibs, Manchester Utd – Manchester City, Arsenal – Chelsea, Liverpool – Everton.

One fan would be jailed for 30 days, three fined £15 and the rest remanded for probabtion reports

  • Hearts beat Standard Liege 2-1 at Tynecastle in the second leg of the European Cup first round game but lost 6-3 on aggregate . The game was marred by Hearts stomping and the bad sportsmanship of the partisan crowd.
  • Also on the Monday following the Glasgow Derby Bobby Collins handed in a transfer request to Jimmy McGrory. The reason for the transfer request was alleged to be purely domestic. Collins had cancelled the build of a new house in Bishopbriggs as well as carpets and furniture to fit out.

Review

Though Celtic had much of the play they failed to convince in terms of playing good football and the shooting in front of goal was errant throughout. Only in the second half did the Cup holders show anything like the quality they were capable of with Tully and Collins to the forefront.
