Trivia

  • It looked as if Bobby Collins was definitely away. Both Jimmy McGrory and Robert Kelly had said that they would not keep a player at the club against his will. There were five clubs from south of the border expressing an interest with Arsenal appearing to be the foremost. On the day before the game Collins signed for Everton for a fee of around £25,000 (in relative terms Don Revie had transferred from Sunderland to Leeds 2 years previously for £22,000 and John Charles had transferred from Leeds to Juventus for £65,000 which was then a record). He made his debut this weekend against Manchester City at Maine Road. It is in a way ironic that Collins joined the club that he could have started with 10 years before.
  • Celtic went to Ayrshire having sold Collins the day before. A Celtic legend, Collins had been with the club since 1949 joining from Pollok Juniors as an 18 year old and making his debut with the first team that season against Rangers. Truly a sad day for Celtic when Bobby Collins left. (Bobby was actually back at Celtic Park on Monday having made his debut for Everton. He was back in Scotland to tie up moves south and always a stickler for physical fitness he trained with the team on the Monday morning in a Celtic shirt).
  • Sammy Wilson was restored to inside left with Collins departure and John Colrain rotated to centre forward at Mike Jackson’s expense.
  • The reserves were in action against Killie Reserves at Celtic Park. The team was Haffey, Meechan, Kennedy, Crerand, Jack, Conroy, Higgins, Jackson, (Newman), Divers, Byrne.

Review

Played with a orange ball and Kilmarnock in all white shirts. The opening moves were even with a goal from Colrain ruled offside on 10 minutes. However from the free Watson passed a high ball back which Brown could only parry to Smith who shot home to give Celtic the lead. Colrain added to the total on twenty minutes when his lobbed shot was saved but he was there to despatch the rebound. Killie replied on 34 minutes with a Joe Mcbride goal. The second half was a more dull affair with Bertie Auld getting two goals, the second from the penalty spot, towards the end. Beattie limped off at the end with a thigh injury.
