Trivia

  • An unchanged side for Celtic. Jackie McGugan the St Mirren centre half was recovering from an ankle injury but played; Sean Fallon though he had played some reserve games was still having trouble with his knee. Matt McVittie who took an arm knock against Dunfermiline was fit and played. Alec Byrne was still not recovered from the hip injury and Johnny Divers had recovered from an ankle injury sufficiently to turn out for the reserves.
  • Full back Frank Meechan went out on loan to Stirling Albion on the 11th November. He played his debut game for them this weekend against Partick Thistle.

Review

Beattie had to be alert right from the off. Far from looking a side that had conceded ten goals in their last three matches St Mirren were off at a flying pace and putting Celtic under serious pressure. Lapsley opened the scoring for St Mirren with a 25 yard free kick which Beattie had no chance against. Campbell added to the total when a Bryceland shot was parried. Celtic were shaken and they could have gone even further behind till Auld took the ball into the centre and flashed a shot to beat Forsyth. Ten minutes later St Mirren regained their two goal lead when Laird's first shot rebounded off McNeill and he calmly slotted the rebound away. Celtic were reeling. McVittie hit the bar just before half time.
It was all out Celtic at the start of the second. Bertie Auld was pulled down on the area and his free kick was deflected into the net by McGugan to make it 2-3. Celtic were adopting a shoot-on-sight policy and most of the half was played in the St Mirren half. Twleve minutes from time Fernie was illegally tackled by Gregal in the box and Auld converted the penalty. There was still time for Celtic to go for the winner but the final whistle saw it all square at 3 a piece.
