- Following on from the exertions of the Ne'erday game at Ibrox, Celtic had to play this fixture against Motherwell. This was the replay of the abandoned game from 6th December – abandoned through fog when Celtic had been leading 2-0. Motherwell had beaten Airdrie 5-2 the previous day and were sitting back in second spot in the table. Motherwell played this game and on the 3rd January played a 2-2 draw away to Hiberian – three games in three days. Celtic were due to face Kilmarnock at home on the 3rd but the game was postponed when the pitch froze solid overnight.
- Neil Mochan found himself out of the team with Jim Kennedy coming in at left back; Matt McVittie was replaced by John Higgins.
Review
Dick Beattie, after an excellent game against Rangers, chose this game to have a wobbler. With five minutes remaining and Celtic 3-1 up, he missed a corner by Weir by a country mile allowing St John an easy header and goal. In the final minute he let a cross from St John elude him and Reid chested in the equaliser.
Prior to this Celtic had had loads of chances and failed to take as many as they should have given the degree of ascendancy they showed over the Motherwell team. Divers scored two goals in the first half, the first a deflection off McSeveny and the second from a clever Colrain backheel. Quinn put Motherwell back in the frame with a penalty given for an infringement the referee saw. Colrain got Celtic's third from a Higgins cross but there was a degree of uncertainty in the goal as to whether Higgins had controlled the ball with his arm.
