Trivia

  • Celtic were drawn against St Mirren in the Scottish Cup semi final, the game to be played at Hampden Park. The other semi was between Aberdeen and Third Lanark to be played at Ibrox. Both ties were for the 4th April.
  • The Scotland team played the Scottish League on the 16th March at Ibrox with the league winning 6-5. This game was considered a trial for the forthcoming internationals. Bobby Evans was at centre half and captained the Scotland team which also contained John Colrain at centre forward. In the League side were Duncan MacKay, Eric Smith and Bertie Auld was a reserve.
  • Neither St Mirren nor Celtic named their teams till just before kick off. The only change for Celtic was Alec Byrne coming in at centre forward with Ian Lochhead dropping out. The absence of Colrain and Auld was becoming perplexing as both had been the best options overall in their respective positions. Both Colrain and Auld travelled along with Billy McNeill and Pat Crerand but none were selected for this game. The explanation given after the game was that it was felt that Ian Lochhead needed a rest and Colrain though he had travelled to the game was suffering from a slight legknock picked up at the Scortland – Scottish League game.

Review

For once, and ominously given that this game marked a pre-trial for the Scottish Cup semi final, the Celtic half backs were outplayed by their opposite numbers. Evans had serious problems controlling Baker throughout the game whereas McGugan ran Alec Byrne out of the game. Sammy Wilson and Mike Jackson found themselves clamped down by Neilson and Leishman and the Celtic front line never really got going. Byrne was said to be eager but slow and pedestrian. Eric Smith had a handful with Gemmell. Peacock too had a patchy game. St Mirren's goal came from a Rodger cross which was fired home by Miller.
The result dropped Celtic back to twelth in the League
