- The game was an all ticket game with tickets going on sale two weeks prior. all the tickets for the enclosure and ground were sold with a capacity set at 35,000.
- Nottingham Forest made a bid of 312,000 for Bertie Auld. The player was happy at Celtic and as such the matter was dropped.
- Sparta Rotterdam manager Denis neville watched the game from the Celtic stand. Sparta Rotterdam were due to play Rangers in the quarter final of the European Cup in March.
- Despite all the Celtic players being declared fit the one change from the previous team was the inclusion of Bobby carroll at centre forward replacing John Colrain. Davis at right half for Rangers was declared fit but Ian McMillan and Alec Scott lost out.
Review
A goal half a minute from the end gave Rangers their fifth successive win against Celtic. The goal came when Bobby Evans headed out only to Baird who passed through to Millar who hit a shot high and hard into the roof of the net past an advancing Haffey. Celtic appealed that Millar had been offside when receiving the pass but the goal stood. Just before Niven missed Carroll's shot and Davis was forced to clear off the Rangers line. Fifteen minutes into the second half Haffey had saved a Rangers penalty pushing the spot kick from Little out for a corner. the penalty came when Jim Kennedy clearly handled a goal bound shot.
Other than these incidents the game was noted as being mediocre in the forwards with dreadful passing partly caused by the soft ground and treacherous conditions underfoot.
