Trivia

  • The injured list was gradually easing. back in came Billy McNeill and Eric Smith with Crerand and Carroll missing out; the forward line was again revamped with Colrain coming back in, Byrne moving out to the left wing and Mochan and Divers moving in one step making Neil Mochan the centre forward.
  • Snow had fallen during the week and the teams came out to a ground speckled with both snow and sand and frozen underfoot. This led to difficult playing conditions with the ball bouncing all over the place.

Review

A solid game with two evenly matched teams. Bobby Evans had a fairly torrid game by his standards. Despite good attempts from both sides it remained 0-0 at the break.
Baker and Colrain were the two stand-outs on either side – Baker with some magnioficent shooting (well matched by Haffey's saving) and Colrain for his boundless energy and non-stop trying. On 57 minutes the Buddies got their reward when from a free kick conceded by McNeill the ball was lofted in and Baker hit the crossbar with Rodger picking up the rebound and heading home. That lead stood for all of 45 seconds as Byrne took off straight from the kick off and scored with a mighty shot with hardly any back lift. Buddies right half lately a target of Rangers, was then booked for one-too-many trip on an opposing player.
