Trivia

  • Celtic played an unchanged team from the previous midweek League Cup defeat to Partick Thistle.
  • Rangers had to win the game to progress. Celtic would progress with just a draw.
  • Following the game there were angry scenes and disturbances outside the ground to the extent that there were calls for postponement of the League game between the two sides in a week's time. 20 people were arrested and fined and 1 man was sent to jail following running battles and bottle throwing along the London Road.

Review

Celtic grabbed an early first goal when Mochan and Carroll combined to send Chalmers through beating an offside trap for the first goal. Rangers resorted to their usual strong arm tactics and Chalmers was penalised when he retaliated against one too many Baxter fouls. Celtic were the quicker to the ball and the more elegant team. Paterson chose to foul his way through the game unpunished denying Hughes. Rangers were an uninspiring sight and Celtic should have gone further ahead on more than one occasion but it remained 1-0 at half time. Kurila pretty much kept Rangers quick centre forward Millar out of the game.
Rangers started the second half at a pace and won a succession of corners and Scott swept the fourth of them over and was met by Davis' head for an equaliser. Celtic continued to have chances but were just thwarted by saves from Ritchie and luck. Rangers made a tactical change withdrawing Millar to a half back role and immediately they started to get the upper hand. With 20 minutes to go Millar headed a ball for Brand to chase and he went on to place a low shot past Fallon. Mochan and Hughes were immediately switched. There was still time for Rangers to thwart Celtic with more rough house tactics and both Baxter and Wilson were warned by the referee. In the end Celtic could not find the equaliser and that was it in the League Cup for yet another season.
