Trivia

  • A degree of disappointment settled over the Celtic camp given the 1-5 loss to Rangers at home. Perhaps it was a culmination of the youth policy that Celtic were embarked upon that lead to such a defeat given Rangers concentration on buying in 'big' players, in more than one sense from wherever. The signs were still there that this could be a Celtic team, but maybe the belief that they would come through this season was tempered by the last game.
  • Back in came Billy McNeill at centre half, fit again from his knee knock. Also back was Bertie Auld from the thigh strain that had proved difficult to overcome. This allowed Carroll to move back to his accustomed outside right, Hughes back to centre forward and Auld at outside left. The news on Haffey was less encouraging – he would be out for at least a further three weeks with the broken finger not healed properly and he returned home with a new cast on his hand.
  • The reserves played Rangers Reserves in the Second XI Cup tie on 13th September. The team was Goldie, Donnelly, O'Neill, jackson, McNamee, Clark, Gallacher, Kelly, Lochhead, Colrain and Auld. Bertie in his first run out after the injury scored two goals.
  • The fifth meeting between the two clubs already this season, with Celtic having won three and drawn one.

Review

Despite the previous results already this season, this turned oput to be an even bigger disaster for Celtic than the previous game in the League. Thirds had the far better start and Fallon in goal was having a real mare dropping balls that should have been held. 15 minutes in and it was a more even game but still Thirds looked the better team. Both defenses looked sound and were up to the challenges being put to them. This made for few goal attempts. Eight minutes before the interval Gray crossed and Goodfellow shot home.
The second half proved to be more of the first half fare. Celtic were getting more chances now but still could not breach the Thirds goal. Hughes and Carroll switched positions without any great difference. Seven minutes from time Thirds got a second through Harley.
