Trivia

  • There was no limited attendance for the game with police lifting the attendance bar of 30,000 which had stood for a number of games both at Celtic Park and Ibrox in response to past crowd trouble.
  • The weather was kind with a fine sky and warm for January.

Review

Celtic led 1-0 at half time, Divers having scored in the 289th minute after Baxter had chosen to indulge in frills of ball control almost on his own penalty spot. An error by Haffey lsot Celtic the game. Scott sent over an ordinary high cross which Haffey missed completely allowing Wilson to head home. Byrne was the best winger even carrying a gashed ankle going into the game but he picked up a further injury in the 30th minute and became far less effective and pretty much a passenger for the rest of the game. It was a game of poor luck for Celtic with Chalmers missing a golden opportunity early, Conway having what appeared a good goal ruled ofut by Tiny Wharton and a Divers shot rolling along the goal line after coming off a post.
Commentators assured that though the victory went to Rangers, the honours went to Celtic.
