Trivia

  • Finally Certic and Bertie made their minds up and declared that he was not up for sale, disappointing Nottingham Forest, Everton, Blackpool and Fulham.
  • Billy McNeill was picked for his first full Scotland cap against the Scottish League. Also selected was Duncan MacKay and Stevie Chalmers was a reserve. Pat Crerand was selected for the Scottish League with Jim Kennedy as a reserve.
  • Back in came Peacock with John Clark dropping out; and though Stevie Chalmers was out with 'flu, Willie Fernie was again fit and came in at inside left. Also back in training was Alec Byrne on the road to recovery from the shoulder injury which had kept him out since the turn of the year.
  • A number of crowd incidents were reported (see match report below) and led to arrests and appearances before the beaks on Monday morning. However it led the Evening Times inveterate bluenose journo Gair Henderson into a full blown rant about banner wavers on the Monday morning following the game. Incidents at games and crowd trouble had indeed been on the wane, particularly at Celtic – Rangers games so that this response from the bold Gair looked like jumping on the bandwagon.

Review

A fast and furious game packed with incidents. Celtic had to weather a full Falkirk storm at the start and did not gain any control till the own goal. Both defences played well and the difference lay in the quality of forwards and their skill, rather than their vigour which both sets showed to the full. Both Celtic penalties occurred when Fernie attempted to dribble through the maze of Falkirk defenders in the area and was tripped. Peacock converted both spot kicks. Falkirk had their own penalty on 69 minutes when Moran was fouled and McMillan beat Haffey. Falkirk's luck certainly wasn't in when Bertie Auld working in along the bye line after a short corner fired in a low and fast shot which took a deflection off of Thomson for an own goal. This was a decent cup tie in the spirit of cup ties with both sides giving everything.
