Trivia

  • Celtic were drawn at home to Montrose in the next round of the Cup.
  • Jim Conway handed in a transfer request. He had just managed a run of four games at centre forward for the first team with young John Hughes out injured and he looked the part after languishing in the Reserves. He clearly thought his chances of further first team action were limited in competition with Yogi and thought his prospects were better elsewhere. The club refused his transfer request.
  • An unchanged side for Celtic to the one that had beaten Falkirk in the Cup game the week before.
  • The pitch wore a light dusting of snow for the game and the weather was cold but fair.

Review

A tricky surface to play on but Celtic started well with shots from Gallacher and Hughes. Celtic did most of the attacking and St Mirren packed their defense. Gradually the Buddies got back into it but just as they looked to have found their feet a Divers shot hit Wilson's arm to give Celtic a penalty. Peacock converted the spot kick to put the Bhoys in front. St Mirren pushed for an equaliser and on 50 minutes Kerrigan beat Haffey. Both sides pushed for a winner and in the last minute Bryceland darted through a scrum of defensers to score with a neat shot.
St Mirren maintained their unbeaten in '61 record.
