Trivia

  • Again an unchanged team for Celtic.
  • Ayr Utd were doing poorly in the First Division and sat rock bottom with 18 points from 26 games. However they had just come off of their first win in some time
  • There were two 'bottle' throwing incidents occurred during the game firmly at the Celtic end. The first occurred at half time when a collection was being taken for Sea Scouts. One of the boys collecting was hit by a glass thrown from the Celtic end. The second was at the linesman who had been giving offside decisions against Celtic.

Review

Celtic were keen to attack and Ayr to counterattack, but neither side appeared to have their shooting boots on correctly and a series of off-target shots resulted at both ends, none of which seriously troubled either keeper. The best of Celtic's lot was a shot from Chalmers which rebounded from the post and ran along the goal line to be cleared. On 41 minutes Fulton hit a 25 yard shot which Haffey failed to see through a mass of players. Celtic replied with gusto and Hughes very nearly levelled it before half time, his shot and rebound twice being saved by the Ayr keeper.
The equaliser finally arrived in the second half from a Chalmers shot which ballooned off the keeper and McNeill raced in to head the ball home. On 74 minutes Celtic went ahead from the penalty spot after Hughes had been upended in the box.. Hughes and McLean were booked late in the game and eight minutes from tiime Fernie added a third for Celtic.
All in all, pretty turgid stuff with the travelling support not doing itself any favours. A number of niggles and disputes took place between various opponents on the field and culminated in the two bookings. Fulton was injured for Ayr and in the second half played little part in the game after scoring.
