Trivia

  • The draw for the semi-final was made with Celtic or Hibs facing Airdrie at home and Dunfermiline facing St Mirren at home.
  • Hibernian were unchanged for the replay.
  • Celtic left naming their team till right before kick off. In came John Clark at left half for Bertie Peacock who withdrew with a knee injury.
  • The odds were against Hibernian as they had failed to beat Celtic in a Scottish Cup tie since 1902.
  • John Clark: “I always say that I scored the best goal ever. It was in a Scottish Cup replay at Easter Road against Hibs [15th March 1961] and I beat a defender at the byline, cut in and poked the ball through [future Celtic keeper] Ronnie Simpson’s legs and said to him: ‘You couldn’t get any better than that could you!’”. It was a vital goal in a 1-0 victory, although sadly we lost in the final to Dunfermline that season.

Review

Finally success for Celtic but it took till extra time to achieve the win.

The game was played at terrific speed and a credit to the fitness of the Celtic side was that they failed to wilt in extra time wheras the Hibs players all looked in need of a rest. Both Baxter and Byrne were booked during the game. Billy Mcneill had a terrific game at centre half with Baker only eluding him once in conventional time, Haffey coming to the rescue when the centre half slipped. The forwards wore down the Hibs defense with Fernie and Hughes in particular always testing. Hughes had a shot cleared off the line. As the game wore on Celtic gradually gained the upper hand and when it went to extra time there seemed to be only one possible outcome. John Clark got the winner with a shot through a melee of players from a cleverly worked short corner. The goal brought the supporters onto the field and it took some time before the game could continue to the final whistle.

Celtic would face Airdrie at Hampden in the semi-final.
