Trivia

  • An unchanged side for Celtic from the one that had beaten Hibernian in the Scottish Cup replay. John Clark retained his position at left half with Bertie Peacock still out with a knee injury.
  • In a trend seen this season towards a return to violent behaviour on the terraces, police were called into action in two games this weekend. The game between St Mirren and Airdrie at Love Street clashes required breaking up in the interval, and at this game at Firhill the police were in action immediately at the start of the second half when clashes broke out on the terracing.
  • Jim Conway broke his nose in a Reserve game and required an operation to reset it.

Review

Celtic won a reprieve on 12 minutes after starting well. The Jags were awarded a penalty when MacKay handled a ball in the area. Wright took the spot kick which Haffey saved. Realising something better was required Celtic took the lead two minutes later. with Byrne heading home from a deep Gallacher cross to the far post. Celtic were now on top and looked the better side against a Partick team which were in the past a bogie team for Celtic. However Thistle were not finished and just before half time Joe McBride (who would go on to join Celtic) pulled a goal back. Back came Celtic and replied two minutes later when a neat pass from Hughes sent Chalmers in against the keeper with Stevie weaving the ball around Freebairn and into an empty net.
The restart was enlivened by fisticuffs and Glasgow's finest wading into the terraces. Onfield, Kennedy headed off the line and the Celtic goal received somewhat of an onslaught from the Maryhill Magyars – all to no avail. The score stood at 2-1 to the Celtic at the end and took the Bhoys up to 5th in the table
