Trivia

  • On the 22nd, Billy McNeill and Pat Crerand played for Scotland U23s against England U23s at Ibrox winning 3-2.
  • Bertie Peacock passed a fitness test at Celtic Park before the game but was not used, instead he got some match fitness in playing with the reserves. The team here was unchanged with John Clark continuing at left half. Bertie's game for the reserves probably was too early and he suffered a recurrence of the injury.

Review

Celtic started the game at a pace with Chalmers and Hughes going close. Dunfermiline weathered the opening storm and went on to score the opening goal on 19 minutes with a shot from Melrose from 20 yards which hit both posts before rolling in.Celtic had a claim for a penalty turned down soon after and the half ended with Dunfermiline attacking again having picked up their game from a lethargic start.
Celtic piled on the pressure at the start of the second and it paid off when Byrne danced past defenders and set up Fernie to shoot home. This was quickly followed by a second from Byrne himself with a wonder goal beating three defenders before prodding the ball past Connachan. Byrne had the beating of the Dunfermiline defenders in the second half but his crosses and passing failed to add to the score.
