Trivia

  • The draw for the next round of the Scottish Cup was made and Celtic faced Hearts at Tynecastle. St Mirren who had put out League leaders Dundee were drawn away to Raith Rovers. Rangers, who had now been installed as favourites were drawn away to either Clyde or Aberdeen (who had drawn their tie on Saturday – Aberdeen duly defeated Clyde 10-3 at Pittodrie).
  • Celtic were due to face Rheims at Celtic Park on 7th February but the tie was called off by Rheims who said they had too many committments at home.
  • Haffey 'scores' a bizarre own goal when he tried to steer a free kick to Dunky McKay but sliced it into his own net.
  • The first change in the forward line since 23rd September, when Chalmers had to withdraw suffering from 'flu. Bobby Carroll moved over to the right wing and in came Alec Byrne.

Review

Divers got the first goal after five minutes with a shot from a Hughes pass. Despite all the pressure coming from Celtic the goals failed to come with Taylor on form in the St Johnstone goal.
Haffey made his first save of the game at the start of the second half. Haffey then managed to put the ball into his own net directly from a free kick in Celtic's favour. Despite claims from St Johnstone for a goal the referee correctly had the free kick retaken. For all their dominance of the play Celtic looked strangely out of form and the crowd were unrestful and churlishly jeers were heard. However on 71 minutes Hughes scored an individual goal beating his marker and hitting an unstoppable shot. St Johnstone then grabbed a goal from Thomson before Divers got his second and Celtic's third.
