Trivia

  • Celtic were in a race with Hibernian to sign Bobby Craig from Blackburn Rovers. The inside forward had previously played for Third Lanark and Sheffield Wednesday. Celtic wanted to sign him to play in the Fairs Cities Cup tie against Valencia on Wednesday night.
  • Billy McNeill was out recovering from the strained ankle ligaments picked up in the Glasgow Cup game against Rangers. It also kept him out of the Scotland team. Also out injured still was John Hughes with an ankle injury and John Kennedy.
  • Scotland played Wales winning 3-2 in Cardiff with Pat Crerand playing for Celtic.
  • Quite a change around; with McNeill and Kennedy out injured after the Glasgow Cup game, O'Neill dropped back to left back and McNamee to centre half; Crerand away with Scotland saw John Clark in for his first appearance of the season at right half and Billy Price back in at left half; up front the tinkering continued with Gallacher and Brogan back in

Review

Celtic's new look defense had a devil of a time at the start and the Arabs had the upper hand. As McNamee gained more confidence at centre half Celtic gradually began to get back on top with Chalmers and Divers providing the biggest threats. Celtic opened the scroing when a Brogan header came off the post to Chalmers who shot home. Both sides had good attempts to increase the scoring in the second half but the single goal decided the points.
