Trivia

  • The icy weather and snow blizzards continued over the country – yet still this game somehow went on with the pitch being quite playable when the snow had been cleared off..
  • There was no news of the bid for Bobby Carroll's services from St Mirren but it would not be till later in the month that St Mirren had the funds in ample following the sale of George McLean to Rangers.
  • A combination of injuries and switching the team around saw seven changes. Both regular full backs – MacKay and Kennedy – were out injured after the Ibrox game as too was Frank Brogan who had 'flu. In came Ian Young for a fourth game this season and starting for the first time was 19 year-old Tommy Gemmell. McNamee was preferred to Pat Crerand, who had found himself out in the cold and dropped following his half-time argument with Sean Fallon at Ibrox, witnessed by Robert Kelly; up-front Bobby Craig was fit again and John Divers came back in too.

Review

A far better performance from Celtic in cold conditions but a much better playing surface. The Celts soon began to take control and in the 14th minute Gallacher seized on a poor clearance and with a cute pass put Hughes in. His first shot was saved but he danced around the keeper to put the rebound home. Five minutes later a Chalmers corner completely outwitted Ogston whose punch put the ball onto the post and there was Craig to touch home. Craig was taking on the Crerand role and spraying passes to his forwards. And ten minutes after that he had a second when Hughes won the ball and passed to Craig whose low shot beat Ogston. Not content Billy Price split the Aberdeen defense with a marvelous pass for John Hughes to get a second and the Celts went in 4-0 up at half time.
Aberdeen made more of a fight of it in the second half and McNeill and the other defenders had to be alert. They got their just desserts in the 66th minute when a decent shot from Winchester beat Haffey. Before the end Hughes got his hatrick.
