Trivia

  • John Hughes was out with 'flu. In came Alec Byrne at centre forward for a first start since early November. Back in came Tommy Craig with Charlie Gallacher dropping out, and in came Tommy Gemmell for a fifth game of the season.
  • The reserve game played on the Friday was played at Barrowfield to try to give the main pitch some time to recover. It was looking decidedly worse for wear with all the bad weather and had been heavily sanded for the last home Cup game against Gala Fairydean. The Celtic reserves were Dick Madden, Ian Young, John Parkes, Allan Lawson, John Cushley, Willie O'Neill, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Lennox, Benny Rooney, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Jeffrey. Only Allan Lawson would miss out on becoming a full time player and make first team appearances.
  • Scotland team manager Ian McColl was at Palmerston Park for the game to assess the Celtic players for the upcoming international against England at Wembley.
  • A wet pitch with water showing in places.

Review

Price had the ball almost from kick off and sent a pass out to Brogan who slipped a neat pass through to Craig who's first time shot flew into the net. From that point onwards it was all pretty much Celtic – yet Queens still managed to score twice and go in at half time at level pegging 2-2. Craig's second was a header at waist height from another Brogan pass / cross. Queens won a penalty when McNeill's sliding tackle on Murray brought him down in the area. Murphy hammered the ball home. Shortly before half time Queens equalised after panic in the Celtic penalty area following a poor punch out from Haffey.
30 seconds into the second half Craig had his hatrick. The somewhat ineffectual Byrne was stopped but passed on to Craig who wasted no time putting it past Farm. Brogan, who was the best of the Celtic forwards, and Mcnamee added two further goals.
