Trivia

  • Everyone was thinking about the Scottish Cup Final replay at Hampden on the Wednesday night. Rangers too were in the same boat and they played Kilmarnock away this night fielding a team with six reserves in it.
  • As such the team was jiggled around with in some sort of weird logic. Bobby Murdoch and Jimmy Johnstone were out supposedly rested, with Frank Brogan and Bobby Craig back in the side. Frank Brogan was switched to outside right and John Hughes to outside left. John Divers went to centre forward and Steve Chalmers to inside left.
  • Motherwell had a number of unfit players and their veteran centre half Martis was suspended – as such they were a much weakened team.

Review

Whether this was an experimental formation or a mere attempt to confuse anyone watching from Rangers – who could tell. The person that benefitted most was Stevie Chalmers who helped himself to three goals and was always up for it. Frank Brogan on the left wing was a wasted move and he lacked service with an invisible Bobby Craig inside of him. Everyone wondered whether Bobby Craig would be offered another contract as he appeared to be so hit-'n'-miss. John Hughes also did well at outside left and appeared to revel in the extra space he was given there as opposed to being centre forward.
