Trivia

  • Drawn in a group with the first and second in the League last season this was always going to be a tough group.
  • Duncan MacKay, Frank Brogan (ankle) and Bob Jeffrey had all picked up injuries in the Pre-Season Open Trial. Bobby Lennox also appeared to be out and had not featured in the pre-season trial.
  • This was not an all-ticket tie, and the gates, including the new extra gates at the Janefield Street entrances, were opened early at 1:15pm to allow as many people in as possible.

Review

This appeared to be just a continuation of the end of last season's humiliation in the replayed Scottish Cup Final. Celtic had opportunities in the first 25 minutes and failed to take them. Forrest got the first goal following a McNeill error. Like Hampden in May, the supporters began to drift away long before the end.
