Trivia

  • During the week Jimmy McGrory and Desmond White flew to Austria to watchn the game between L.A.S.K. Linz and Dinamo Zagreb, the winner of which would be Celtic's second round opponent in the European Cup Winners Cup. In the end the match was decided on the flip of a coin after finishing level on aggregate after 2 rounds and Dinamo Zagreb won the toss.
  • This was the weekend of the League Cup Final between Morton and Rangers. Rangers won 5-0 against the Second Division side.
  • It was Jimmy Johnstone's turn to go down with 'flu. In came Charlie Gallacher as his replacement.
  • Airdrie were bottom of the table with 1 win and 1 draw in 8 games. It was not a pleasant return to Celtic Park for Bobby Jeffrey who had been transferred to Airdrie at the beginning of the month. Airdrie also had another Celtic old bhoy in Jimmy Rowan at right half.

Review

The first goal came when McKenzie parried a Hughes shot to Gallacher who put the ball home. Hughes soon headed home a second. From this point on it was all Celtic. Murdoch shot home from the edge of the area after a Divers pass. Hughes got his second with a 30 yard shot that McKenzie could only watch fly past. Gallacher then made an opening for Divers to shoot home. And Chalmers made it six just before half time.
The second half continued as the first with McKenzie in action all the time. Divers scored twice and Hughes got his hatrick.
Frank Haffey missed a penalty with Celtic 9-0 up when McKenzie saved his shot.

Three wins and a draw had helped to boost Celtic's position in the table and they stood at 6th.
