Trivia

  • Neil Mochan rejoined Celtic as an Assistant Trainer to Sean Fallon.
  • John Hughes had recovered from 'flu and was back training. On the Wednesday before Ian Young was ordered to bed to hopefully recover in time for the game. He recovered in time for the game and with Hughes back on the left hand side, Celtic were back to their full strength team. Airdrie also fielded a full strength team which included 4 from the team that had been thrashed 9-0 in the league back in October – Keenan, ex-Celt Jimmy Rowan, Hannah and Murray.
  • Billy Price handed in a third transfer request which was finally agreed to and he was released on a free. He was then handed a £5 fine by the SFA for being sent off in a Reserve game. Third Lanark and Morton were said to be interested in his services.
  • Ex-Celt Mike Jackson was transferred from St Johnstone to Third Lanark in an exchange for Ken Brownlee plus £1500.

Review

Celtic started the better and pounded the Airdrie goal and on 10 minutes they were ahead when Chalmers received a ball in his stride and shot home a 20 yarder. Gradually Airdrie got back into the game and there were a few scares in the Celtic goal. Hughes was injured close to the end of the half and went off for treatment but was soon back in time to see Airdrie claim for a penalty against Gemmell which was waved away by the referee.
Shortly after the restart Hughes was flattened in the area and Murdoch put the spot kick away. It was all Celtic now but Airdrie pulled one back when Jimmy Rowan won out in a goal mouth tussle. Despite it appearing more even Celtic scored twice more through Johnstone and then late in the game with Hughes, despite Clark going off with an injury ten minutes from the end.
The man behind most of this win was John Divers, sitting as he did for much of the season slightly deeper he was able to direct pplay and become the link man. He didn't score but a lot of the moves started through him.
