Trivia

  • The second round draw in the Fairs Cup had been made. The winners of the tie against Leixoes would play Barcelona.
  • For Celtic, an unchanged side from the one that put 5 past Partick Thistle. Hearts players at that time were in a pay dispute with the management. They were seeking a £5 a week rise from £25 to £30.

Review

By half time Celtic led by 3 goals to nil and with a shoot-on-sight policy it could have been 6-0. In the second half Murdoch coverted a penalty when Gallacher was fouled to make it 4-0 before Fallon fumbled a pass back from Young allowing Wallace in to give Hearts a consolation goal. Murdoch then converted a second penalty after an infringement against Chalmers, and Gallacher wrapped up the scoring. With 21 goals in 6 games things were starting to look good for the next derby against Rangers. Charlie Gallacher had an outstanding match but all the Celts played well and were eager to receive the ball. There was a spark and step change in the players this season, noted by all.

No one else from the group could overtake them now and Celtic qualified for the play-off stages for the first time since 1958-59 season.
