Trivia

  • Celtic returned from Portugal after their Fairs Cup game with no other new injuries.
  • In what smacked of serious directorial tinkering, a much changed Celtic side entered the field. Charlie Gallacher and John Cushley were both out with stomach upsets after the Portugese trip. To cover their positions, Jimmy Johnstone was moved to inside left and in for his first team debut came Tommy Curley. For Cushley, Ian Young was pushed up to centre half and Duncan MacKay brought back in at right back.
  • Hearts also had a debutee in Ford, who had previously been an amateur with Bo'ness.

Review

Celtic went three goals down in sixteen minutes and they never recovered from the early Hearts strikes. The first goal on four minutes came from Hamilton's deflection of a Wallace shot. Wallace added one of his own two minutes later and Gordon on 15 minutes knocked the stuffing out of the Bhoys. Johnstone and Curley then switched positions. Hamilton also missed a penalty for Hearts on 35 minutes when Young bundled over Wallace in the box. Gemmell then cleared off the line in the last action of the half.
Hearts continued to hold the upper hand throughout the second half. But as the half wore on Celtic rallied and Murdoch pulled one back after good work by Chalmers. Gordon restored Hearts advantage before Lennox pegged back a further goal from a Curley cross just before the final whistle.
