Trivia

  • Left winger and Eire international Joe Haverty joined Celtic from Millwall on a month's long trial.
  • Third Lanark made a bid to take unsettled goalkeeper Frank Haffey to Cathkin Park. Though Celtic and Thirds had agreed terms, Frank turned the move down.
  • The game was played on a Tuesday night at Ibrox. The other semi final between Rangers and Dundee Utd was played at Hampden on the Wednesday night.
  • The team were beginning to suffer from a number of niggling injuries to players and there were quite a few who were carrying these through games. Ian Young and Tommy Gemmell were both carrying leg and ankle knocks. Billy McNeill was out long term recovering from his chipped ankle. John Cushley and Charlie Gallacher were recovered from stomach upsets but Cushley was also carrying a leg knock. And John Hughes was back in training after his own leg injury.
  • John Hughes had not recovered sufficiently and Lennox took the outside left position. Luckily the nonsense of team tinkering was seen through and with Gallacher and Cushley both recovered from stomach upsets the team was restored to its more usual line-up.
  • Morton were unchanged for the game but were missing their start player Ally McGraw who was recovering from a cartilage op. They also had ex-Celt Eric Smith at inside right.

Review

Celtic advanced to the final for the first time since their league Cup win in 1957-58 but it was a hard fought game and Morton produced a matching team on the night in all but goal scoring ability. Morton's game plan was to defend in depth and this they did well for 54 minutes. Jinky made the first goal completely banboozling the Morton defense before sending over a cross for Lennox to score from.
