Trivia

  • Frank Haffey signed for Swindon Town. He had been unhappy since the end of the last season when he had lost his starting place to John Fallon. He had re-signed his contract then immediately asked to be transfer listed. When Celtic signed Ronnie Simpson from Hibs they were then prepared to take offers for Haffey. Bobby Evans, manager of Third Lanark failed with two bids to keep Haffey in Scotland.
  • This game was played on a re-arranged Monday night due to the General Election.
  • Tommy Gemmell was fighting a fitness battle for this game. He injured his ankle part way through the Aberdeen game and immediately had treatment for the injury on the Sunday following the return from Aberdeen. He won the battle and duly made the game and Celtic fielded an unchanged team from the side that had beaten Aberdeen.
  • Morton were unbeaten in the League this season having only just been promoted to the top division.

Review

John Hughes was the star for Celtic in this game. Everything seemed to click for big Yogi in this game and he was more involved than usual. But for good saves and stops by Morton's two Danish players, Sorensen in goal and Kai Johansen at left back, John might have had two goals of his own. As it was he set up and brought in others and played unselfishly throughout the game. John Divers got the goal early after a mistake and short pass back by Reilly. Morton proved worthy opponents with a young Joe Harper at centre forward but just could not score. They played a tight close-passing game.
