Trivia

  • Both Tommy Gemmell and Bobby Murdoch were in fitness races to recover from the ankle knocks, Murdoch's received in the Boxing Day game against Motherwell. They both won their battles and played. Charlie Gallacher was preferred at outside left to Bobby Lennox. As such Celtic fielded a strong side all of whom were first team choices with only Chalmers for Divers being the replacement if Steve had not been recovering from a broken ankle.
  • Rangers were unchanged but Brand, Henderson and Baxter were out with various injuries.

Review

Celtic fell to Rangers yet again and this time with Jimmy Johnstone being ordered off at the end of the first half and Bobby Murdoch missing a penalty. Jinky's crime was a 10 yard run and dive at Rangers new boy Thorolf Beck (Icelandic, he had been signed earlier in the season from St Mirren). Earlier there had been as equally offensive tackles made by Provan, Millar and Hughes which had resulted in ticking offs by the referee let alone bookings so it is probable that referee was making an example of Jinky to curtail the roughouse that was developing.
Rangers were sluggish but still managed to contrive a win without three of their regulars playing. Celtic's bad luck continued playing over half the game with 10 men, and continuing in the 84th minute when Celtic were awarded a penalty after Hughes was brought down in the area by McKinnon. Murdoch shot high over the bar with his spot kick. Hughes and Provan were also booked in the game.
