Trivia

  • Negotiations pressed ahead with Birmingham City for the transfer of Bertie Auld back to Celtic. Falkirk were also bidding for his services. Sean Fallon had been absent from the Dundee Utd game the previous Saturday as he travelled south to watch Bertie play for Birmingham against West Ham. By the 14th Bertie was a Celtic player again in a £12,000 deal. So sold to Birmingham City in May 1961 for £15,000 and bought back in January 1965 for £12,000. Bertie himself said, "I'm a lucky man. Most players are fortunate if they can join Celtic once in their career. I look on it as an honour to have been given a second chance to play for the club."
  • The bold Bertie immediately came in at outside right with Gallacher moving in one. The major changes occurred in the half backs with Jim Brogan switching to the right for John Clark (who was dropped despite good work and excellent passing) and Jim Kennedy restored to left half. In goal John Fallon was preferred to Ronnie Simpson.
  • Celtic historian David Potter claims that such was the despondancy surrounding the Celtic support at this time that Hearts had as many fans as Celtic in the ground at this game.

Review

Celtic lost to top-of-the-table Hearts at home to continue a miserable run in the New Year despite the personnel changes. All the goals came in the first half. Hearts went ahead in the fourth minute when a hard shot by Hamilton across the goal hit Fallon on the knee and bounced into the net. Tommy Gemmell equalised for Celtic with what would become a trademark piledriver. Hamilton got a second for Hearts with a header before the interval.
