Trivia

  • Morton gained a draw after being 3-0 down. Bertelsen scored right on full time but referee had blown for time up to deprive Morton of a famous win.
  • Celtic were clearly on the look out for new players. Having signed Auld from Birminhgham City, Jimmy McGrory had been back to Ireland allegedly on a scouting trip. Celtic were also linked with Irish international and Sunderland player Johnny Crossan but Sean Fallon denied any link. He eventually joined Manchester City for £40,000.
  • This was an all-ticket game and was one of the few to go ahead this weekend in a weather affected programme.
  • In an attempt to find the best side the tinkering continued. Kennedy was dropped from the half backs with John Clark back in on the left and Jim Brogan continuing on the right. Bobby Lennox was brought in on the inside left.
  • Morton were having a good season, marking their return to the First Division and they were one of the teams in the forefront of signing Scandinavian players to play in Scotland, a move that was causing the Scottish Professional Footballers Association to have a few flutters about the numbers of Danes, Swedes, Finns and Norwegians playing in Scotland.

Review

Celtic were three up at one stage but Morton staged a comeback scoring three goals in six minutes and in fact could have lost as a Bertelsen shot was headed into the goal as the referee blew his whistle. Morton looked a beaten team when Tommy Gemmell got the third goal on 65 minutes. Bertie Auld had a hand in all the Celtic goals. Lennox got the first with a header from a Bertie cross. Hughes got the second just before half time from a Bertie pass and in the second half, Gemmell got the third from 30 yards again from a Bertie pass.
