Trivia

  • On the 31st January Celtic announced the appointment of Jock Stein as the new manager. Stein would remain manager at Easter Road until they had found a new manager and he would then move to Celtic. Jimmy McGrory would step down and sideways to become Press Relations Officer. Graham McColl in his book 'The Head Bhoys' points out the Stein was actively being hunted to move south of the border as a manager. He had received an offer to manage Wolves and discussed it over a lunch with Roberrt Kelly. This alerted the Celtic Chairman and he offered the big man the job but was then left in a cleft stick over Sean Fallon (who was being groomed to take over from McGrory). Stein offered to keep him on as an assistant but made it perfectly clear that there would be no interference from anyone in team matters.
  • Celtic were unchanged from the side that had administered an 8-0 whooping to Aberdeen. St Mirren had ex-Celt Bobby Carroll at centre forward (he had hit a real purple patch this season with the Buddies) and a young Archie Gemmell at outside right.
  • The tea leafs were active at the St Mirren turnstiles on the day with one opportunist sticking his hand through the grille to pocket a handful of notes and another making off with a bag of silver.

Review

The kick off was slightly delayed to allow the crowds for the game to get in. Through the first half Celtic built the pressure and they were clearly on top without having put the ball in the back of the net by the half time whistle.
In the second half Celtic finally got going properly. A Lennox shot was only parried away and there was Chalmers to head home. St Mirren responded and in turn put the Celtic goal under attack but like Celtic in the first half they could not find the net, and after this counter-attacking flurry the Buddies seemed subdued. Chalmers saw more and more of the ball as Celtic went for the killer punch. However it was not until the 82nd minute till Bobby Lennox made the second goal before getting his second just before the whistle.
