Trivia

  • The cup tie against St Mirren had not been without incident and Celtic had John Hughes struggling after the game with a back strain. He won his fitness battle during the week and returned to training.
  • In the next round of the Cup Celtic were drawn against either Dumbareton or Queen's Park depending on the outcome of their replay.
  • Jimmy Johnstone appeared in front of the SFA Referees committee and received a 14 day suspension for his sending off at Ibrox in the Ne'erday game.
  • Aberdeen manager Tommy Pearson resigned following the Dons Scottish Cup replay defeat to East Fife.
  • Again an unchanged side for Celtic. Playing centre forward for St Mirren was a young lad promoted from their Reserves, Pat Hughes, youngerr brother of Celtic's centre forward John Hughes.

Review

Celtic started with confidence but it was the Buddies that took the lead when Bobby Carroll opened the scoring in the fifth minute. This was soon cancelled out with a glorious strike from Steve Chalmers. From that point on Celtic were in little danger. Hughes had the ball in the net again but was offside and before half time Bobby Lennox added a second to finish off a well-worked move.
In the second half Jim Brogan got on the score sheet with a 20 yard shot, followed by further goals from Hughes and Murdoch. Seven minutes from time Murdoch went off with a leg knock.
Despite not scoring Bertie Auld had a great game bringing players in and making good telling passes and runs.
