Trivia

  • Steve Chalmers, John Clark and Billy McNeill were all fit and available for selection. There were a few minor knocks from the Falkirk game and the naming of a team was delayed to the match day. Kennedy came back in at left back. McNeill and Clark were restored to the half backs. Chalmers came back at centre forward with John Hughes moving out to outside left and Bertie Auld moving in one. With Lennox moving to inside right it was Charlie Gallacher that missed out.
  • In the match programme Jock Stein hinted at his displeasure and at future changes in personnel for the next season and a change in attitude.
    • "Our own staff of players have had their chance – there can be no justified complaints if we seek to strengthen our team. And this is going to be done irrespective of what happens within the next week or two. This will not make pleasant reading – it is not intended to do so. Time and again this season the team has shown great promise but there has been no lasting result of that promise. It is difficult to understand how a team can play so well as Celtic did against Hibernian when we won 4-0 and be so dissappointing against Third Lanark and Falkirk. "

"I did not see the match with Thirds. I was in England studying certain players who in the not distant future might help us to gain that consistency we need and we must have."

Review

The team followed up the humiliation at the hands of Falkirk with another loss, this time at home. The team were roundly booed by the support and made to look ordinary by the Jags. After a goal-less and fairly even first half, all the goals were scored in the second. Gibb gave Thistle the lead in 52 minutes and Hogan got a second on 70. For Celtic Steve Chalmers scored with nine minutes remaining with a header from a Bertie Auld corner..
