Trivia

  • In a new right side, in came Jinky Johnstone and Charlie Gallacher for Steve Chalmers and John Divers. Raith Rovers were undefeated in their nine previous games this season.
  • Spurs' assistant manager Eddie Bailey watched Jimmy Johnstone. Since dropping into the Reserves, teams had been alerted to the fact that Johnstone might be available. Both Spurs and Motherwell hade made enquiries but Jock Stein said he is not for sale at any price.
  • At centre half for Raith Rovers was a 38 year old Bobby Evans who after a spell in management and coaching at Morton and Third Lanark, was now player coach at the Kirkcaldy side. Next to him was Ian Porterfield who would go on to play for Sunderland before embarking on an illustrious management career culminating with Chelsea in the early 90's
  • The Celtic Board discussed the fate of the Brazilian trialists at the club. Both Inacio and di Sousa had played well with the reserves attracting large crowds to their matches. The other two had not played a game as they were still attached to their Brazilian clubs and no release to play had been received.

Review

John Hughes scored three goals and made three others in this 8-1 rout of the Kirkcaldy side. From the first minute Celtic adopted a shoot on sight policy and Tommy Gemmell might have put them one up in the first minute, his shot cannoning off the crossbar. McBride and Lennox added two goals within 30 seconds and this was countered with a strike by Richardson for Raith. Celtic added a third before half time through Jimmy Johnstone. In the second half it was more a question of how many goals Celtic wanted to score.
