Trivia

  • Celtic announced they were releasing all their Brazilian trialists, though Inacio and Fara had a stay of execution of a week. The problem was more a question of cost with the fees asked for the players being too high.
  • Back in came John Divers at inside right and John Hughes was moved to centre forward with Bertie Auld recalled to ouitside left. Missing were Charlie Gallacher and Joe McBride who had picked up injuries.
  • The crowd could have been as high as 83,000. The gates were closed 25 minutes after kick off leaving thousands still outside the ground and some scaled the entrance to get in. There was an enquiry by Glasgow magistrates into the gate closure which came down to the decision of the match police commander when disturbances were seen amongst the late arrivals. As a result the decision was made to return to all-ticket Glasgow derbies.
  • The Celtic Reserves beat the Rangers Reserves with George Connelly getting the goal in a 1-0 result. This maintained the reserves 100% record this season.

Review

Celtic were badly hindered by an injury to Billy McNeill in the second half. He left the field but returned after treatment and went to centre forward with Bobby Murdoch taking over at centre half. Forrest put Rangers in front after an error by Gemmell who sliced the ball right to the Rangers man when trying to clear a ball. Celtic's equaliser came from the penalty spot when Greig brought down Lennox and John Hughes converted the spot kick. Rangers got their own penalty two minutes later when McNeill edged Forrest off the ball. In the second half Celtic played with the wind behind them and strove for the equaliser. However Rangers were not to be beaten and the injury to McNeill put pay to any chance of getting back on level terms.
This was 9 years without a win at Ibrox.
