Trivia

  • The fall out over the pitch invasion by Rangers supporters at the end of the League Cup Final at Hampden continued. John Lawrence the Rangers chairman stated that all the pitch invaders were kids at most 14 years old. The SFA immediately began an enquiry. In the end the invasion of the pitch was Celtic's fault for going on the lap of honour (though they didn't get to the Rangers end and headed for the centre circle after displaying the cup at the Celtic end) and laps of honour were banned at Ibrox after games for 10 years.
  • For this game, a Wednesday night game, Ronnie Simpson was in doubt having picked up an ankle knock at Hampden. Joe McBride recovered from his back injury and started and after a fitness test Simpson retained the goalies jumper.

Review

This was as tough game for Celtic who showed the brilliance of their wing play with both Johnstone and Hughes to the forefront of play and the victory. Jimmy Johnstone made the first goal, collecting ain midfield and sprinting away with the ball before releasing a pass to McBride which the centre forward finished with a cool shot. The second came when Lennox dispossessed the Dundee right half Cousin and walked the ball through to score. The second half saw a determined Celtic defense in the face of strong attacks from Dundee
